Andrew Bachell, Director of Policy and Advice in Scottish Natural Heritage, supports the Year of Fieldwork, commenting: “Almost everything we know about nature comes from fieldwork,

from observing and recording plants and animals and the interactions between them and with people.  In order to give advice we in SNH rely on good quality surveys, monitoring and assessments made in the field. But it is not just the science and the understanding that is important, there is also great satisfaction that comes from making those observations personally and building first-hand experience.  The opportunity to undertake fieldwork in the past has certainly benefited me and it was often very enjoyable.  I urge schools, universities and other educational bodies to encourage fieldwork as a thoroughly enriching and lasting educational activity.”
